Don’t be Fooled – Drawing the World’s Top Talent Made America Great

For decades, the United States has maintained its status as the world’s economic superpower by acting as a magnet for the world’s best and brightest. Imposing short-sighted restrictions on high-skilled immigration, such as the recently struck-down $100,000 H-1B visa fee, does nothing to protect the American workforce. Instead, it actively starves the nation of the very innovation and tax revenue required to sustain our aging population.

The Engine of Innovation and Job Creation

Highly skilled immigrants do not displace American workers; they expand the entire economic ecosystem. Empirical data shows that foreign-born talent acts as a powerful catalyst for domestic prosperity. A major study by the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE) revealed that companies that successfully secured H-1B visas experienced a 27% increase in revenue compared to identical firms denied access to talent.

Research from the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) shows that a 1% increase in H-1B workers in an occupation accelerates earnings growth for native U.S. workers and reduces the field’s overall unemployment rate. Immigrants have founded or co-founded over 40% of Fortune 500 companies and more than half of all U.S. “unicorn” startups, creating millions of jobs for American citizens.

Funding the Safety Net for an Aging America

The economic necessity of high-skilled immigration becomes even more critical when viewed through the lens of America’s shifting demographics. The U.S. domestic population is rapidly aging, placing unprecedented financial strain on public safety nets. As the Boomers retire and healthcare costs continue to climb, fewer domestic workers are left in the labor pool to fund vital entitlement programs.

High-skilled foreign workers provide an immediate, highly effective solution to this fiscal crisis. H-1B visa holders and their families contribute an estimated $86 billion annually to the U.S. economy. This includes $24 billion in federal and payroll taxes and $11 billion in state and local taxes. Because H-1B visa holders enter the country as working adults, the U.S. reaps the financial rewards of their peak productive years without having subsidized their childhood education or healthcare.

The billions of dollars these professionals pay into payroll taxes directly fund Social Security and Medicare. This cash influx supports vulnerable American citizens in need without raising tax rates on domestic workers. When restrictive policies or exorbitant fees lock out global professionals, the economic fallout is swift. Denied the talent they need to scale, American corporations increasingly offshore their high-tech operations to countries like Canada or India. Limiting H-1B visas does not save American jobs; it exports American capital and shrinks the domestic tax base.

To secure our financial future, fund our healthcare programs, and protect our retirees, the United States must remain open to the world’s premier talent. In the global race for the future, talent is the ultimate currency. Closing America’s doors to the world’s brightest minds doesn’t protect our homeland, it simply hands our greatest competitive advantage to our rivals. To keep America great, we must ensure the next generation of life-saving technologies and economic security is built right here at home.
