Make it Square: Why America Must End Gerrymandering

The most fundamental promise of American democracy is that the people hold the ultimate power. This is not the case if my vote counts more than yours. A quiet, mathematical form of corruption has entrenched itself within our state capitals: partisan gerrymandering.

Gerrymandering is an active threat to our national stability. By weaponizing data software to rig district boundaries, politicians and party bosses manipulate our elections. Instead of candidates earning your vote, politicians hand-pick their preferred voters and exclude you. To restore our system of self-governance, we must replace backroom corruption with objective, rules-based technology.

The Death of Accountability

Partisan line-drawing deliberately insulates politicians from the judgment of their constituents. Through the tactics of “packing” (cramming like-minded voters into a single district to waste their voting power) and “cracking” (scattering cohesive communities across multiple districts to neutralize their influence), mapmakers intentionally construct an unequal system. This artificial distortion directly violates the foundational American truth of One Person, One Vote.

A republic cannot survive if the government treats some votes as inherently more valuable than others. Equal justice under the law is destroyed when the state systematically diminishes the weight of your ballot based on your zip code. When safe districts are carved out to guarantee a predetermined victory, general elections lose their meaning. The real election shifts to low-turnout primaries, forcing candidates to appeal exclusively to extreme factions. This structure kills the political incentive to compromise, directly fueling the gridlock gripping our nation.

Wrong is Wrong: The Conflict of Self-Preservation

It is easy to look the other way when map manipulation benefits your preferred side. But the fundamental truth of political integrity is that wrong is wrong, regardless of which party holds power. Power is cyclical. The hyper-precise map drawn to benefit one party today will inevitably be weaponized against them tomorrow when the political winds shift.

The courts won’t save us. The Supreme Court ruled in Rucho v. Common Cause that federal courts do not have jurisdiction over partisan gerrymandering, leaving the responsibility entirely to legislatures. But we are asking the foxes to fix the hen house. Politicians are paralyzed by self-preservation. They are terrified that participating in fair redistricting means they will literally map themselves out of a job. Because the courts have stepped aside and politicians are trapped by fear, We the People must push this issue forward.

The Solution: An Objective, Rules-Based AI Framework

If human politicians are too compromised by self-interest to draw fair maps, we must remove them from the equation. The solution lies in American technological innovation: only by developing neutral voting maps can we truly have fair elections. By programming AI models with strict, unchangeable rules, we can completely strip power away from partisan operatives. These algorithms can be hardcoded to prioritize permanent geographic realities, such as strictly adhering to existing county borders, keeping local communities intact, and maximizing geographic compactness.

Most importantly, the AI can be explicitly blinded to partisan voting histories and incumbent data. It introduces absolute transparency to a broken political process. An AI does not care about protecting a politician’s career or securing a party’s legislative majority; it only cares about the mathematical rules it is given.

Reclaiming Our Democracy

In 1891, President Benjamin Harrison warned the nation that partisan map manipulation was a form of “political robbery” and represented our “chief national danger.” His words echo with striking accuracy today. As Harrison noted, a free ballot and equal representation are not luxury items; they are “the price of our allegiance to laws.” Americans must refuse to accept a system where outcomes are predetermined. By embracing objective, AI-driven mapping solutions, we can break down structural barriers, restore accountability, and ensure that politicians must work hard to earn the vote of sovereign citizens. It is time for We the People to reclaim our country.
