US Counterterrorism Strategy 2026 (Part 1)

The 2026 US Counterterrorism Strategy has finally been released, and it was well worth the wait for both Putin and Orban. It is a masterful work of authoritarian deconstruction of Western democratic values. The brief document opens with a WWE intro by our President explaining that if we have labeled you a terrorist, “We will find you and we will kill you.”

Along with cartels and “narco-terrorist” regimes, there are some new villains for us to fight, now known as “radically pro-transgender” individuals, whatever that is. In the Strategy the United States claims to be committed to protecting Christians in Africa and Catholics at home, just not in Palestine. This is another effort to undermine the Papacy and drive a wedge between “Conservative Catholics” and Catholics with a heart.

Most fascinating in the 2026 US Counterterrorism Strategy is where it explicitly prohibits the Intelligence Community (IC) from being “weaponized” against “innocent Americans.” Who can argue with that? Actually, we already have real laws and policies that protect “innocent Americans” from government intrusion, for example Executive Order 12333, FISA (Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act), and the Privacy Act of 1974. Google’s AI technology explains this well, “A vast framework of existing laws and policies is designed to prevent the Intelligence Community (IC) from targeting Americans. The “weaponization” language in the 2026 Strategy is largely rhetorical, framing the new administration as a protector against what it claims were past abuses by political opponents.”

Most frightening in the plan is the glaring omission of Right-Wing Violent Extremists or White Supremacists as a threat, and the “priority targeting” of Antifa or anyone labeled as a terrorist. This is an easy way for a government to quell dissent and is common practice in some of the worst dictatorships around the world. Once a group is labeled an FTO (Foreign Terrorist Organization), anyone in the U.S. suspected of providing “material support” can be targeted by federal authorities. By rebranding political dissent as ‘terrorism,’ the 2026 Strategy effectively bypasses our Constitution. It’s a legal sleight-of-hand as you don’t have to follow the Fourth Amendment if the person you’re targeting is classified as an “enemy combatant” rather than a citizen-defendant. When “dissent” is defined by the state as “terrorism”, the rule of law is usually the first casualty.
