It is a little sad to see that our Republican strategy for gaining back seats in the next election consists only of criticizing everything that the competition does. Blaming inflation on Biden is like crediting Trump for the economy. These are slow moving ships with lots of factors affecting them. One big factor on inflation is all the stimulus checks we got. Wasn’t it Trump who started the process and wanted his signature on each check? Not that there was anything wrong with the stimulus, people were hurting and some of us needed help. That is what government is supposed to be for.
We also demanded a living wage. Who doesn’t want more money? Higher pay, free college, and a stimulus check. These are great ideas, but someone must pay. How is a small business, or any business, supposed to afford to pay their employees more money? The answer is higher costs. We don’t want that. We are the problem. There is no free lunch. That is what the Republican Party used to stand for. There is however an answer, LEGAL Immigration.
A big part of our problem is there aren’t enough US workers to fill the jobs we have available. American employers have to offer more money to attract employees, and that means they raise their prices to cover payroll costs. What if we allowed more work visas? Legal immigrants/temporary workers could take the jobs US workers don’t want and pay taxes to help us keep Social Security afloat. We benefit in four ways: Inflationary pressures are reduced, prices stay down, businesses fill unskilled labor positions, AND we avoid cuts to Social Security.
